Best Yacht Winterization Gear (2026): Antifreeze, Dehumidifiers, and More
A pro winterization runs $300–$800 at most yards. Doing it yourself with the right gear costs $100–$200 and a day of work. Either way, skip the gear or skip a step and you're looking at $4,000–$15,000 in spring-thaw repairs. This is our 2026 buying guide for the parts of winterization that matter.

What you actually need
The winterization gear list breaks into four categories:
- Antifreeze — propylene glycol marine antifreeze for cooling systems and freshwater plumbing. Don't use automotive (ethylene glycol) — it's toxic and corrosive in marine systems.
- Fuel stabilizer — keeps gasoline from going stale and gumming carburetors / injectors.
- Engine descaling kit / flush adapter — pumps antifreeze through your raw-water cooling system.
- Storage moisture control — dehumidifier or DampRid keeps cabin mold from taking over.
1. Star Brite Premium -200°F Marine Antifreeze (Best Antifreeze)
For: every yacht owner winterizing in any climate. The -200°F rating is "burst protection" — meaning it won't crack pipes even at extreme temperatures. The actual freeze-slush point is around -50°F. Propylene glycol formula is non-toxic (safe for freshwater systems) with corrosion inhibitors that protect aluminum, copper, brass, and solder. Plan on 2–3 gallons per inboard engine plus 2–3 gallons for plumbing.
2. Star Brite Engine Winterization Kit (Best Flush Setup)
For: owners pumping antifreeze through inboard or sterndrive cooling systems. The kit includes a 5-gallon bucket with a hose adapter and dip tube — fill with antifreeze, hook the hose to the raw-water intake (at the seacock), and the engine pumps the antifreeze through itself. Without this, you're trying to pour antifreeze into a hose while the engine runs, which is messy and unreliable. A one-time $80 buy that pays back the first season.
3. STA-BIL 360 Marine Fuel Stabilizer (Best Fuel Treatment)
For: any boat with a gasoline engine sitting through winter. Modern ethanol gasoline goes bad fast — phase-separating water out and gumming up carburetors and injectors over a single off-season. Add to a full tank, run for 10 minutes to circulate, then store. 8oz treats 80 gallons; 32oz treats 320 gallons. Don't skip this if your boat has gas — diesel is more forgiving but still benefits from a biocide.
4. SEEKR by Caframo Stor-Dry (Best Active Dehumidifier)
For: boats with shore power available during off-season. The Stor-Dry is a low-wattage warm-air circulator (90W — basically a light bulb's worth of power). It heats and circulates cabin air just enough to prevent condensation and mold. Effective for spaces up to 1,000 cubic feet. About $130. Pays back the first time you don't have to deep-clean mildewed cushions in spring.
5. DampRid Hi-Capacity 4lb Bucket (Best Passive Moisture Absorber)
For: boats stored without shore power, or as a supplement to active dehumidifiers. Calcium chloride pellets pull moisture from the air. The 4lb bucket lasts about 6 months in a typical cabin. No power needed. Place one per enclosed space — main cabin, V-berth, head, locker. Cheap insurance ($15-20/bucket) for hull-stored or trailered boats with no electrical. Pair with the Stor-Dry on shore-power boats for best results.
6. DampRid 2.5lb Hi-Capacity Bucket (Compact Option)
For: lockers, smaller cabins, or owners who want fewer big buckets. Same product, smaller form factor (2.5 lb vs. 4 lb). Lasts 4 months instead of 6. Easier to fit in lockers, cockpit storage, anchor wells, and other smaller spaces where moisture pools. Buy a 4-pack at the start of the off-season; place one in every enclosed space larger than a sail bag.
How much winterization gear do you need?
For a typical 30-foot cruiser:
- Antifreeze: 4–6 gallons total (engine + plumbing). Plan $80–$120.
- Fuel stabilizer: 1 bottle (32 oz). $20.
- Engine descaling kit: 1 (one-time buy). $80.
- Dehumidifier: 1 Stor-Dry if shore power, OR 2-3 DampRid 4lb buckets if no power. $130 or $50.
- Total first-year cost: $230–$350. Subsequent years just antifreeze + stabilizer + DampRid refills (~$120/year).
What to skip
- Automotive antifreeze (green ethylene glycol). Toxic to humans and corrosive to brass/aluminum cooling systems. The savings are not worth the damage.
- Generic "RV antifreeze" without corrosion inhibitors. Cheaper, but eats engine internals over time.
- Fuel stabilizers without biocide for diesel. Diesel grows microbes ("diesel bug") in storage. Your stabilizer should specifically mention biocide.
- Standard household dehumidifiers. Too power-hungry, not designed for marine humidity, often dump condensate to the floor.
- Cheap shrinkwrap kits without vents. Trapped moisture creates mold faster than no cover.
What about shrinkwrap?
Most owners hire this out — a yard does shrinkwrap for $20-30/linear foot, which is hard to beat for DIY when you factor in the heat gun, plastic, vents, time, and risk of melting through and damaging gelcoat. If you do DIY, get a kit specifically rated for marine use and include 4+ vents per boat.
